Practical guide

Measure training application

Decide what evidence you will collect before the programme starts.

Use with your team

A working checklist.

Before training

Select a few tasks and use a repeatable scoring rubric. Record the baseline and relevant context.

At the end

Use a comparable task assessment. Report the sample size, scoring method and completion rate.

After 30–60 days

Ask the sponsor whether people are applying the tasks. Review relevant operational measures where access and permission allow.

Separate the measures

Attendance shows participation; an assessment shows learning; workplace observation shows application. They answer different questions.

Be careful with ROI

Changes in errors, cycle times or cost can have several causes. Do not attribute all improvement to training without supporting evidence.

Use the findings

Discuss whether the next step is more practice, changes to the process, targeted support or no further intervention.

Let’s talk
